One of a set of four prints, first published by I. W. Laird, Leadenhall Street, in 1841 and dedicated to Lord Segrave, the race umpire. Such sets, descriptive of the drama of a whole event - its beginning, its action, its culmination - are firmly in the tradition of the narrative cycle. It is not too fanciful to categorise them with the Assyrian relief sculptures of lion hunts, with mediaeval tapestry cycles depicting the events in a saint's life, or with Renaissance frescoes glorifying the various phases of a battle. And, setting aside the matter of relative aesthetic value, they and all their forerunners share with the best of modern comic cuts a vivid communicative power.
