One of a pair, published by Arthur Ackermann, 191 Regent Street, 1st October 1877.
This is an unusually tranquil hunting scene, hingeing on contrasting moods rather than on the exhilaration of the chase. What is depicted here could well be the hounds being taken out for training during the time known as 'cubbing'. This is the time between the harvest and the seeding of the new crops when the young hounds, each chained to an experienced companion, are initiated. They go not to kill the fox but to get accustomed to follwing the scent. The fox's cover is surrounded and each time he tries to bolt he is driven back to give the hounds a longer acquaintance with his scent. These expeditions usually set out between six and eight o'clock in the morning; formal hunts begin at 11am.
