This is a delightful hunting scene by Snaffles, amongst the most popular sporting artists of the twentieth century. Snaffles hunted keenly from an early age and his understanding of field sports, combined with his sharp wit, gave his work an endearing and authentic quality which has ensured that it remains prized by collectors to this day. His famous subject The Huntsman, often subtitled The Oss Loves the Ounds but I Loves Both, was first published in around 1923 and depicts the huntsman counting his pack around him. By the early 1920s, Snaffless rise to celebrity was rapidly accelerating. He had endured significant financial hardships in the years preceding the First World War but, during the war itself, his contributions to various magazines, as well as the increasing popularity of his prints, had assured him of a comfortable existence. After the war, Snaffles took up residence at Windlesham in Surrey, and the classic racing and hunting scenes he produced from his new base quickly secured his reputation as one of the greatest sporting artists of his day
