First published by Moon, Boys & Graves of 6 Pall Mall, on 1st July 1830. The correspondence of Henry Graves, one of the publishing partners, shows that the engraver John Scott died whilst engaged on this plate and that the work was completed by John Webb. Spaniels are usually sturdy gun-dogs, trained for both flushing out and retrieving game. The one shown here, however, seems to be a King Charles spaniel, bred for companionship rather than work.
