This is a charming racing cartoon by Snaffles, one of the most popular sporting artists of the twentieth century. Snaffles hunted keenly from an early age, and his understanding of horses combined with a sharp wit to provide his work with an endearing, authentic quality which has ensured that it remains prized by collectors today. Snaffles painted many celebrated racing and point-to-pointing scenes, of which perhaps the best known is The Worst View in Europe, which was the depiction of an exhausted horse and jockey coming up to Bechers Brook at the Grand National in 1901 and which contrasted healthily with a hunting painting with the title The Finest View in Europe showing the clear view ahead across a pastoral landscape from the saddle of the hunt. After the end of the war in 1918 and over the next 30 years Snaffles produced a series of wonderful racing images, many of which were published as prints and collected avidly by sporting enthusiasts of the time; indeed, most were hand-coloured by Sbnaffles himself or by his sisters, who ran almost a cottage industry in support of their brothers work
