The Last Beat depicts two classic yachts, Shamrock and Columbia, in the last of their famous America's Cup races in 1899. The race was held along the Jersey shore on October 29th and the run down to the mark was described by one American author as 'the finest fifteen mile run in international yachting history'. The two craft raced neck and neck until the last beat, when Columbia finally edged ahead. Once in the lead, Columbia turned the stake boat faster than her rival and was eventually victorious by over six minutes.
