This was the first International Grand Prix to be held in Britain since 1927 at Britain's newest circuit a disused airfield near Towcester named Silverstone. It consisted of 3.67 miles of old runway and outroads winding round straw bales and oil drums. The painting shows Luigi Villoresi leading his team mate Alberto Ascari around the bales at Segrave corner. They were both driving the new 'San Remo' Maserati. 4CLT/48. Having arrived too late for practice they started at the back of the field 24th and 25th.They soon powered through the field to finish 1st and 2nd respectively with Britain's Bob Gerard 3rd in an ERA. Villoresi set a lap record for the new 65 lap circuit of 76.82 mph
