Johannesburg is a thoroughbred race horse who stood at stud at Ashford Stud (Coolmore - Ireland) in Versailles, Kentucky until 2009 when he was relocated to Japan. While a juvenile (2 year old) in 2001, he captured thoroughbred racing’s attention on both sides of the Atlantic by winning major graded stakes in the United States (Breeder’s Cup Juvenile), England (at Newmarket, Leopardstown and Ascot), Ireland (at the Curragh) and France (at Deauville). These victories and others earned him the unique status of champion 2 year old in America and champion 2 year old Europe as well as the champion miler in Europe all in one year (2001). Even though he is in Japan he continues a leading sire of thoroughbred race horses in the US as well as internationally.
