The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers has been playing golf since 1741, originally on the Leith Links, then on the Musselburgh Links and finally to the Muirfield Links. The first winner of the Open at Muirfield was Harold H. Hilton in 1892. Since then there has been a long list of illustrious winners at this very prestigious venue who include Harry Vardon, James Braid, Walter Hagen, Henry Cotton, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Ernie Els.
